Comparing white pigments for coatings beyond the price per tonne
Evaluate hiding power, dispersion and finished coating performance alongside pigment purchasing costs.

Compare equivalent finished performance
A lower pigment price does not by itself establish a lower formulation cost. Compare coating coverage, film thickness and the loading required to meet the same target. Include dispersion time and other process effects where they affect production.
Measure more than initial whiteness
Evaluate hiding power, undertone, gloss, viscosity and storage stability using consistent methods. A small colour difference can matter in a tinted coating. Review the results at the film thickness and drying conditions relevant to the finished product.
Consider the exposure conditions
Interior and exterior coatings face different demands. A pigment package that works in an indoor primer may not meet the needs of an outdoor topcoat. Assess weathering, water resistance and other required properties at the formulation level.
Confirm changes through trials
When considering lithopone or another change to a titanium dioxide pigment package, test multiple formulations against an approved control. Replacement ratios and cost savings must be demonstrated in your system. Request grade information and samples before making a commercial change.
For the identity of the rutile pigment family, see NIST Chemistry WebBook: rutile (TiO2). Compare commercial grades using current technical data and equivalent finished-coating tests.
